Overview

This trail is one of the most fascinating for hikers interested in culture because it leads to the Langtang area with a little elevation gain while yet providing spectacular vistas and experiences of the Himalaya. This trek will take us through some of the most beautiful scenery in all of Nepal, including Tamang villages with terraced hills, ancient monasteries, and even a hot spring. With most hikes, you'll be confined to hotels and teahouses the whole time, but on this walk, you'll get to spend at least one night in a traditional Tamang home, where you'll get a taste of what it's like to live in the hills of Nepal.

The journey begins in Syarubensi, a village about an eight-hour jeep ride from Kathmandu. We are now going to Gatlang, where we will spend the night at a Tamang home. From Gatlang, we travel to Tatopani, whose name comes from the local hot water spring and literally translates to "Hot Water." The entire route affords us breathtaking views of the Langtang and Ganesh Himal. Thuman, the next stop on the trail, may be accessed by traveling to the historic monastery of Nagthali. From here, we travel along a historic Tibetan trade route to the frontier between Nepal and Tibet, where we can see the ruins of a fort that was built a century ago.

We continue our hike through the rhododendron groves and arrive at the settlement of Briddim, where we can see a number of monasteries and chortens. For the time being, at least, this is the most significant point in our journey. After two days, we begin our trip back to Syarubensi, from whence we set out, and continue up to Kathmandu by jeep.

The religion of the Tamang people is Tibetan Buddhism, which they adopted due to their strong ties to the Tibetans and their shared cultural practices. It is the home of many followers of the Sakyapa school of Tibetan Buddhism, and you will witness many examples of Tibetan ornamentation.

Those interested in culture won't want to miss the opportunity to stay in a traditional Tamang house while taking in breathtaking views of the Central Himalayas and hills on the Tamang Heritage Trail.

Itinerary

A representative from our company will meet and greet you at the airport as soon as you land in Kathmandu. We will see to it that your travel requirements are met once you are in our care. Given that there are no planned activities for the day, we will assist you in checking into your chosen hotel. You have the option of taking a stroll around the neighborhood or relaxing in each of your rooms.

Visit to cultural and religious sites of Swayambhunath, called the monkey Temple, Pashupatinath, one of the largest temples in Nepal and Bouddhanath, the large stupa are in our itinerary today.

Pashupatinath Temple:   One of the oldest Hindu temples, Pashupatinath Temple, is dedicated to Lord Shiva, also known as the "Lord of All Beings." Lord Shiva is the embodiment of the universe's destructive aspect. The Pashupatinath complex is traversed by the revered Bagmati river. For those who pass away on the banks of the river, cremation rites are performed by the majority of Hindus in the Kathmandu Valley.

Swayambhunath Stupa:  The Swayambhunath stupa is one of the most revered buddhist stupas in Nepal. It is thought to have materialized when, in ancient times, the Bodhisattva Manjushri carved a canyon at Chhobhar using his flaming sword to drain the waters of the huge lake that was Kathmandu.

Bouddhanath Stupa: Lord Buddha's four pairs of eyes are positioned in the four cardinal directions atop the 2500-year-old Buddhist stupa in the Valley, which was erected in the fifth century. This stupa keeps a constant watch over people and their actions. Buddhist pilgrims from Tibet may be seen spinning prayer wheels as they round the stupa.

You can also walk around Thamel and Asons around the vicinity of your hotel selling handicraft items and locally made trinkets and clothes. Ason, the oldest market in Kathmandu also lies a few hundred meters from your hotel. You can shop for spices, tea, brass statues, and decorative jars in this market.

Waking up early and grabbing breakfast we drive northwards from Kathmandu to Syaprebesi through a road. We take the Trishuli Highway which snakes the Trishuli river. Many villages and towns are crossed en route. We grab lunch at Trishuli Bazaar, a famous town in the region. After crossing the bazaar, we reach a checkpoint. The road becomes narrow as we ascend the offroad track. Then we reach the Army check post at Dunche where we get the entry permit for the Langtang National Park. From here we travel to Syaprebesi. We explore the town of Syaprebesi and stay over for the night.

Today’s trail begins nice and early at Syaprubesi. We grab breakfast and head towards Gatlang via a gradual ascending switchback. Nearly two hours of ascending will give you amazing views of Ganesh Himal and the Gosainkunda mountain range. Lantang Lirung can also be seen from here peering through the nearby hills. A number of Buddhist chortens which act as small shrines and a reminder of the words of the Buddha line the trail. Prayer walls can also be seen. Walking some more we reach the village of Golijung for lunch. After filling our bellies, we begin to move on trail again. Gatlang, our destination for the day lies only around 3 hours from where we had lunch. There is a very ancient monastery which some say is over 100 years old at Gatlang and a small lake called the Parvati Kunda, named after the wife of Shiva, Parvati. We stay-over at Gatlang for the night at a traditional home.

After a good night’s rest, we grab breakfast and begin the second day of our trekking journey. Many consider today to be the most difficult part of the trek. We begin descending at first through a ridge that runs alongside the Bamdang Khola. The Chilime Khola now joins us as we reach the town of Chilime after around two hours. We’ll cross a suspension beifge and then begin our ascent until we reach the village of Gongang where we stop for lunch.

After giving our legs some much-needed break, we continue the ascent from Gongang for around two hours before reaching our destination for the day at Tatopani.

Today is probably the longest day of our trek but it's less intense than yesterday.  After breakfast, we begin walking through rhododendron forests. Monkeys can be seen in the forest jumping around above us. Soon enough the trail opens up to the Brimdang village. Continuing from here we start climbing up and get amazing views of the nearby mountains like Ganesh Himal and Langtang Range. We climb the Nagthali hill and from atop you get awe-inspiring views of additional mountains like Sishapangma which lies in Tibet. After taking enough photos, we begin descending through forests to Thuman. The monasteries in Thuman are worth exploring and the Tibetan influence is strong here.

Upon waking up this morning, we will begin packing for our journey to Timure and the Kerung border crossing into Tibet. Continuing northeast, the trail we're on climbs a stony hillside. From here, we descend precipitously via Dalphedi to the Bhote Koshi River suspension bridge. Leaving this point, we travel the new road north for a little over an hour to reach Timure. Timure is a stunning Tamang settlement near the Langtang Range and the Tibetan border. We can rest for a little at Timure, and then continue on foot to the Tibet border to do some more exploring. Once we get back, we have dinner and call it a night.

We're off to Briddim, a sizable Tibetan settlement influenced by Tibetan culture, after a hearty breakfast. We'll be traveling through rhododendron groves and open fields on our way to the Tamang settlement of Briddim in the Langtang Valley. Many of our visitors look forward to reaching Briddim, the terminus of the Tamang Heritage Trail. Spend the night in one of the cozy wooden rooms at a teahouse operated by a local family. You'll learn more about the local culture and have fun swapping anecdotes with your host. You can spend the rest of the evening exploring the village and the monastery and culture here.

Returning to Syapru Besi is the concluding leg of the Tamang Heritage Trail. From Briddim, you can also make the journey to the holy place in the Langtang Valley by detouring to the Gosainkunda lakes and Helembu. From the starting point at Briddim, the track to Syapru Besi is an easy downhill hike through beautiful pine and Rhododendron forest. After then, the trail widens up and heads progressively downhill till Kanjhim. From here, Syapru Besi can be reached after a short, steep descent down the Bhote Koshi River.

We take a drive from Syaprebesi back to Kathmandu. Following the scenic trail. Again we have to stop at numerous army checkpoints and police checkpoints to register that we have completed the trek and are safe. We can stop by for lunch nearby Trishuli also or in teh bustling town of Bidur. Depending on the road traffic and condition, there are numerous ways to reach Kathmandu.  On a clear day the route is vibrant and we can even see the many central Himalayan mountains from the vehicle. We reach Kathmandu in the evening and you will be free to enjoy the amazing completion of the Langtang Valley Trek in Kathmandu.

After the Tamang Heritage trek is over, it's time to say goodbye to Nepal and go home. We'll pick you up three hours before your international flight and take you to the airport. We hope that the time you spend with us in the Central Himalaya will give you memories that you will remember for the rest of your life. You are welcome to stay longer in Nepal if you want to, and the country has a lot of history and culture to offer. Please keep us in mind and tell anyone who is thinking about going on a trekking trip in Nepal to get in touch with us. In this situation, it would be better to say "Feri Bhetumla," which literally means "Till we meet again."

FAQ's

The optimum time to hike the Tamang Heritage Trail and other trails in the Langtang region is between the months of September and November, or between the months of March and May. September to November are the Autumn seasons and March to May are te=he Spring seasons The pure air and bright sunshine of late autumn and early spring make for spectacular scenery while hiking among the mountains and forests. Flowers abound during the spring making the routes prettier. As an alternative, the months of December, January, and February are a good time to make this hike. Since these are winter months, you should pack accordingly for the possibility of frost and snow in some areas of the journey. However, the monsoon season is not ideal for hiking because the trails get muddy and leeches are abundant.
