Trek along a route less frequented by trekkers. Enjoy the quiet and solitude of the wild Everest landscape during your Gokyo Lakes Trek.
Get acquainted with the mountain people in the heart of the Himalayas
Thrilling crossing of Renjo La (5,360m), a high mountain pass. Among the 3 high passes, Renjo La is the easiest to cross and offers the best views of Mount Everest, Cho Oyu, Makalu, and Lhotse (all 8,000m peaks). Ascend Gokyo Ri for astounding mountain views

Overview

Being one of the highest lakes in the world, Gokyo lake offers some of the most beautiful landscapes in the world. Bring right next to huge Himalayan mountains like Everest, Cho You and Makalu, the trip offers one of the best opportunities to explore the Himalayan region. The Gokyo lake trek is one of the most famous treks that do not involve peak climbing in Nepal.

Trekking to Gokyo lake will have you going through the wonderfully beautiful Sagarmatha National Park. The Sagarmatha National park contains some of the most diverse flora and fauna for you to see and experience due to its extremely large range in altitude.

The 13-day trek officially begins in Lukla which we reach via a short flight from Kathmandu. The flight itself is very scenic as you get wonderful views of the Himalayas from the skies. From Lukla we start walking to the village of Phakding which lies at an altitude of 2652m. Staying overnight at Phakding, we climb up to the famous village of Namche Bazaar the next day. Lying at an altitude of 3440m, Namche is the gateway to the Eastern Himalayas and is also called the Land of the Sherpas. Exploring Namche bazaar, we make our way to the famous Everest View point from where we get one of the  best views of Mt Everest. Exploring nearby Namche moving up and down, we acclimatize our bodies to the thin air and spend a total of two nights at Namche.

From Namche we make our way to the village of Dole which lies at a massive altitude of 4100m walking through the mountain pass of Mong. Fauna like the musk deer and mountain goats are seen quite commonly around this area. Staying overnight at Dole, we move towards Macchermo through many settlements which will be abandoned come winter. You get wonderful views of Cho Oyu as you climb towards Macchermo. After an overnight stay at Macchermo, we climb to the main destination of our trip, Gokyo Lake, known locally as Gokyo Ri. The incredible view of the lake, which come winter gets completely frozen making way for ice-skating activities. The 360-degree view of the 8000m tall mountain peaks along with the serenity of the lake are sure to keep you mesmerized. After spending some time at Gokyo, we start our journey back to Macchermo on the same day.

An unforgettable walk past the stunning Gokyo Lakes trek adventure is for those looking for an adventurous Himalayan trek. Walk past a wild and solitary trail filled with icy glaciers and jade-green lakes. Cross a high mountain pass, Renjo La, the easiest of the 3 High Passes, and climb Gokyo Ri for awesome views of Mount Everest and other 8,000-meter peaks.

From Macchermo, we follow the same route back to Lukla, going through Dole and Namche. The trip officially ends with a flight back to Kathmandu, having been to one of the most mesmerizing lakes in the world.

Itinerary

Upon your arrival in the International airport at Kathmandu, after completing your custom formalities (Visa, etc), pick up your luggage and look for our representative with an Accessible Adventure Travels & Tours Trekking display board at the arrival gate. You will be transferred to a hotel of your choice. After check in, you can take rest, hang around in the city, or go for a stroll to get familiar with your surroundings; it all depends upon your interests and condition. In the evening we will organize a "Welcome Dinner" at an excellent traditional Nepalese Restaurant where you will enjoy a Nepalese cultural program as well as a fine meal. Your first overnight in the ancient city of temples & cows, probably the most in the world.

After breakfast, we get transferred to the domestic terminal of Kathmandu airport for an early morning flight to Lukla (2,800m/9,186ft), a gateway to the destination from where our trek starts. After an adventurous 40 minute flight above breathtaking green and white mountains, we reach the Tenzing-Hillary Airport at Lukla. This is one of the most beautiful air routes in the world culminating in a dramatic landing on a hillside surrounded by high mountains peaks. Here we meet our other crew members and after some packing and arrangements, we start our trek through the prosperous village of Lukla until we reach Phakding. To assist in acclimatization, we only have a short hike today. However, if interested in additional activities we can take a side trip to a nearby monastery. Overnight in Phakdingat a guesthouse. This is the first of the three scheduled "acclimatization" days. Health experts always recommend us to stay active and moving during the rest days instead of being idle. We either spend the day taking a day hike to Thame or visiting the Everest view point or relaxing and exploring Namche Bazaar itself. Namche Bazaar is the main centre of the Everest (Khumbu) region and has government offices, ATMs, Internet cafes, shops, restaurants, a bakery and a colorful market each Friday evening and Saturday. If we trek a few hundred vertical feet during the day, it will help us to properly acclimatize. Our guides will take us to the Tourist Visitor Center near the headquarter of the Sagarmatha National Park where we can observe an assortment of things related to the first Everest ascenders, Sherpa culture and learn about the various plant and animal life of the Everest region. We climb steeply out of Namche Bazaar up to Kyangjuma Village from where; we can enjoy outstanding views of Thamserku, Kantenga, and Ama Dablam. Most strenuous ascent of the day is obviously to pass the Mong La, a very charming place perched on the spur of Mt. Khumbila. An ancient historical Chorten stands at the centre of the settlement of Mong La. We stop at the top of Mong La to admire the grandstand views of surrounding snow-capped mountains and valleys while we have our lunch & rest the body. The most outstanding feature of the trail today is the abundance of plant and animal vegetation including wildflowers and Rhododendrons. Spotting wild animals like pheasants, mountain goats, and the elusive musk deer while on the way is not unusual. Through forests, some waterfalls and bridges, we reach Dole; a small pert place with few teahouses. We bunk out for an overnight in Doleat a guesthouse. Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner Included .

Serenity in Solitude on the Gokyo Lakes Trek

The Gokyo Lakes Trek is a perfect solo escape, and stunning beauty in the heart of the Himalayas. The view from Gokyo with Everest in the distance,is simply unforgettable. For a solo traveler, it's a peaceful and soul-refreshing adventure.

Amod Dani,

Me, my wife & our elder son (part of hike) did Gokyo Lake trek in May 2024. This is a bit shorter than EBC (92km instead of 103 km) but the views are much better. As probably many of you know, one cannot see Mt Everest from EBC, but you get a much better panoramic view from Gokyo. This is still a very challenging hike and if you plan to hike in 2025, you should start working out & training for it right now. Nepal takes its trekking very seriously so in the worst-case scenario helicopter rescue is available at many of the villages along the trails. Warm food, hardworking guides/porters make the treks very bearable and the villages along the trail have "tea houses" which means you have roof over your head & clean toilets as well. So, you don't have to worry about staying in tents - even at altitude of 4800m. Weather in May has been increasingly cloudy/rainy + a lot of smog. Visibility was poor during the hike except for the day we climbed Gokyo Ri peak (5300meters). I would recommend that you reconsider doing Gokyo hike instead of EBC and do it in the month of October (will be colder than May for sure). From Gokyo Ri one can see four 8000m+ peaks including Mt. Everest. In terms of duration, I agree that 10-12 days seems to be on the lower side. Acclimatization is part of the overall schedule, but everyone does struggle with lower oxygen levels above 3500m no matter what. Please keep 2-3 days of buffer time for extra rest/flight delays. Flights to/from Kathmandu to Lukla can get suspended all the time (sometimes for many days at a stretch) during May due to poor visibility. We ended up paying extra for helicopter ride but even for that we had to wait at Kathmandu airport for more than half a day because visibility was poor even for helicopters. Our guide Shiva is a fantastic guide. He is knowledgeable, encouraging & resourceful. He arranged good hotels for us and also took good care of us in terms of food preferences and other needs. I would highly recommend him & accessible adventures to anyone planning to do a hike in Nepal.
