Combining the two most famous treks in the Annapurna region: the Poonhill trek and Annapurna Base Camp trek the Annapurna Sanctuary trek is absolutely amazing. The trek first takes you on a loop around the Annapurna region by visiting the Ghorepani-Poonhill area. The view from up here is absolutely amazing. The sunrise from Poonhill attracts locals and internationals alike. At the region you will be able to see local houses and villages also to get an idea of what life is like here. After this, we walk down to Chhomrong to rejoin the classic Annnapurna Base Camp Trek.
Moving from villages like Deurali, Bamboo and Dovan we reach the Macchapucchre Base Camp and walking further we reach our second objective, Annapurna Base Camp. The 360 degree view from Annapurna Base Camp is amazing as well. Almost the entire trek follows the Modi river all the way up to the base camp.
The trek is named the Annapurna Sanctuary Trek after the area in the Annapurna Conservation Area where killing animals is prohibited by local religious customs. The Gurung, one of the many indigenous peoples of the region, held the entire sanctuary in the highest regard as a sacred place. They thought it was the Nagas' (Indian serpent gods) repository for treasure, full of gold and other valuables. Deities from Hinduism, Buddhism, and even older animistic religions were thought to make their homes in the sanctuary. Machhapuchhre, the gateway peak, was believed to be Shiva's dwelling, and the daily snow gushes were interpreted as the god's incense.
You will experience a diversity of ecosystems while on the trek. Rhododendron forests, bamboo groves, pine woodlands and areas with only small shrubs and herbs are all experienced on this trek. The temperature variation is also quite large from Pokhara all the way to the ABC.
You will be able to catch views of Annapurna, Machhapuchhre, Annapurna South, Gangapurnam Himchuli and many more massifs on the trek. So if an exciting adventure in the mountains is what you are looking for join the Annapurna Sanctuary Trek!
Best Season
Most people agree that the best times to hike the Annapurna Sanctuary trail are in either October or November, or in April or May. Clear, dry weather prevails during these two seasons, making hikes to higher elevations less of a challenge. During these two seasons, hikers from all over the world journey to the Himalayas. The spring season, which lasts from March to May, is when the majority of the year's flowers bloom. Many people find that the added color variety enhances the aesthetic value of the trails.
However, the best mountain views are to be had in the autumn, when the skies are crystal clear. As a result of these factors, autumn is regarded as one of the top reasons for hiking.
The winter season, which lasts from December to March, is also characterized by clear skies and stunning vistas. Colder temperatures and deeper snowfall at higher elevations may make it challenging to reach Annapurna Base Camp.
and the route to the peak will be closed during this time.

As we start trekking from Nayapul, we cross numerous villages and farmlands. One of the villages is Birethanti, where a tourist checkpoint exists and we register. Those wishing to take the short Annapurna Base Camp Trek can take the route via Birethanti. Crossing the Birethanti bridge over the Modi river, we walk through the main road that lies beside numerous terraced farm fields. The main road itself goes through a forest making for an exciting walk. We reach the village of Sudhami where we grab lunch. The trek trail ascends from Sudami and we reach the village of Hile. During spring poinsettia can be seen all around us. Walking through the ascending trail we reach Tikhedhunga. The village is open to exploration to see the local lifestyle of the people. Nearby the village is a waterfall that we can visit also. Guesthouses and hotels are decked in flowers here as is the custom. We stay overnight here at Tikhedhunga.
After early morning breakfast we a suspension bridge and climb around 3300 stone steps. While climbing we get to see the valley we passed through yesterday as well as get excellent vistas of the terraced farmlands behind us. We also get an amazing view of Annapurna south while climbing. We eventually reach Ulleri village which showcases a great view of Fishtail mountain. Ulleri is a large village built in a traditional style. After a short exploration of the village, we ascend to the village of Ban Thanti, where we can stop for tea. We can sip tea amid excellent views of Annapurna South and Mt.Fishtail. We cross through forests of rhododendron en route to Ghorepani. We cross through the village of Nange Thanti where we can grab lunch. After crossing a check post at Lower Ghorepani. Walking around 10 minutes, we reach upper Ghorepani which showcases a 360 view of the Dhaulagiri and Annapurna mountain ranges. We can also explore the Ghorepani village where we stay overnight. The dining rooms here have a fireplace with a chimney that allows us to warm ourselves.
We wake up before sunrise and take a one hour walk to climb Poon Hill. The view of the sunrise form Poon hill is absolutely amazing and is considered by many to be the best sunrise view in Nepal. From the top of Poon hill, we see mountains of Dhaulagiri I, II , Annapurna I, Barha Sikhar, Annapurna South, Himchuli, Gangapurna, Mt Fishtail, Mardi Himal and Lamjung Himal. In front of the mountains lie hills that are decked with rhododendron in spring. After taking tea and enjoying the view from the top we return back to Ghorepani where we grab breakfast.
After lunch, we begin our trek to Tadapani. We ascend Gurung hill through forest trails surrounded by Rhodendron. Again, the views of the mountains and the valleys we walked through can be viewed in all their glory from the top of Gurung Hill. We continue our trek to reach the village of Deurali from where we descend. During winter the narrow trail is quite slippery. We reach a second village by the name of Ban Thanti and grab lunch. During the monsoon, we can enjoy the bamboo shoots. Monkeys can be seen on the trail along with many domestic animals. We descend a slippery route, cross an iron bridge and start our ascent. After a short duration, we reach Tadapani from where the view of Mt. Fishtail is amazing as well as close. Here, the trail to Annapurna Base Camp and Khopradanda starts. The dining rooms here have a fireplace with a chimney that allows us to warm ourselves.
After breakfast, we begin on our trail. The trail begins as a descent through a large rhododendron forest. As we walk further the trail eventually opens up to terraced fields. Here, the traditional way of farming can be seen. From here the trail starts ascending for a long time and we will walk nearly 2 hours uphill to reach a suspension bridge. Crossing the bridge over the Modi Khola, we walk for a few more kilometers. The trail goes uphill and downhill numerous times before making the final push to Chhomrong. Chhomrong village is very beautiful and is located below the Annapurna Massif. The views of the mountains peering from the hills here can be seen. We stay overnight in Chhomrong.
We leave Chhomrong early in the morning after grabbing breakfast and descend more than 2200 stone steps. Crossing the suspension bridge we start our ascent which lasts for around 2 hours when we reach Sinuwa. After Sinuwa you need to get ready to spend the life of a vegetarian for several days as animal slaughter is forbidden in the region due to religious values. Walking beside ridges and small trails, we see the river below the ridge. We reach Doman where we grab lunch for the day. From Doman, we move towards Bamboo. We see a lot of bamboo on the route from where the location derives its name. Here, there is a high chance of seeing bears and if we are extremely lucky we might be blessed by getting to view the Red Panda. Numerous waterfalls can be seen on the route as well.
Walking along this route, we reach Bamboo. During the spring season in Bamboo, we can get to eat vegetables and pickled bamboo. We stay at Bamboo for the night.
After grabbing our breakfast, we start ascending through forests where we may get to see black bears and monkeys and the elusive Thar. We traverse a bamboo forest where we can see monkeys jumping and playing around the area. Along the way, we see some shrines and temples. There is a large waterfall a small distance away which will be mesmerizing to take in. After ascending, we reach a small temple from where after a short break we continue walking all the way to Himalaya Hotel where we grab lunch. After freshening up and having our fill, we ascend again to Deurali. En route to the top, we can visit a cave known as Hinku Cave. Between the cave and our destination at Deurali, is an avalanche-prone hill.
Crossing the area, we reach Deurali where we stay overnight.
Getting up early, after filling our bellies, we move towards our destination, ABC which we reach via Macchapuchre base camp. After some time walking through forests and woodlands we begin walking through the ridges of the Himchuli. At the bottom route snaking the base of Fishtail mountain, we can see a stone in the likeness of the Buddha. After a few minutes' walk from here, vegetation starts becoming scarce. This area is slightly risky in terms of its geography. We get excellent views of the surrounding mountains during the trek. We also cross a fast-flowing glacial river which normally freezes during the winter. After some time reach Macchapuchre base camp. We spend some time and grab lunch in the Macchapucchre. Moving from the Macchapuchre base camp we cross a river and walk through forests. Before reaching the Annapurna Base Camp we see a large banner welcoming us to the ABC. There is a lodge at the Annapurna Base camp where we drop our belongings and explore the surrounding areas in the base camp. Small avalanches can be seen often from the base camp near the surrounding mountains making for exciting phenomena. We stay overnight at the hotel.
We wake up very early before sunrise and walk 5 minutes to a small sunrise viewpoint where we get to experience a wonderful sunrise in the western Himalayas. Nearby the viewpoint we see many chortens and memorials made to commemorate those who lost their lives trying to climb the mountain. We also see a 360-degree panoramic view of the many mountains from a viewpoint. We grab breakfast at a nearby lodge and start our descent to Dovan, where in front of us will lie the Majestic Fishtail mountain. We cross Deurali and start to see vegetation again, reach the Himalayan hotel again where we grab food and rest for some time before we start moving to Dovan and, crossing the village, reach our destination of Bamboo.
We wake up early in Bamboo, grab breakfast and we go through a slight ascent for an hour, walking through woodlands to reach Sinowa. We descend from the village of Sinowa to then climb the 2200 stone steps we had descended earlier on our way to ABC. Rhododendron and what is in Nepali known as the “itchy” tree. We can grab lunch either at Sinowa or Jhino danda. After lunch, we go to a natural hot spring where we rest our weary bodies. Besides the hot spring, there is also a cold water river running from the glacial regions. After our bath, we return back to our lodge for the night. Here we can enjoy ourselves and party after completing the trip.
From Jhinu Danda we grab breakfast and descend to Nayapul, crossing through one of the longest and highest bridges in the Annapurna region. We get to see locals at work in their farmlands and grab lunch at Kimche or New Bridge where we can eat freshly caught fish. We check out from Birethati to reach Nayapul. Our vehicle will be waiting for us at Nayapul from where we drive back to Pokhara.
From Pokhara we start moving to Kathmandu after breakfast via tourist bus, On the way, we make a stop for lunch and rest while enjoying the beautiful hilly terrain that we move through. We arrive in Kathmandu after an approximate 8-hour drive where you will be dropped in a hotel.
After successfully completing the Annapurna Base Camp hike, it's time to bid Nepal farewell. Three hours before to your scheduled international flight to your next destination, you will be taken to the international airport. You can prolong your stay in Nepal if you'd want to visit all of the fascinating places the country has to offer. We really hope you will appreciate the time we had together and recommend us to your friends and family for their trip to Nepal to go trekking. This is not "Goodbye," but rather "Feri Bhetumla," which means "Til we meet again" in Nepali.
