Embarking on the Everest Base Camp (EBC) trek offers adventurers the unparalleled opportunity to stand at the foot of the world’s highest peak, a journey that is as rewarding as it is challenging. This iconic trek not only promises views of the awe-inspiring Everest but also immerses trekkers in the rich cultural tapestry of the Sherpa people, offering a glimpse into their life, traditions, and the vibrant Buddhist monasteries nestled in the heart of the Himalayas. The journey to EBC is not just a physical trek but a voyage that engages the spirit, amidst landscapes that defy imagination with their serene beauty and rugged wilderness.
A typical EBC trek spans about 12 to 14 days, beginning with a flight from Kathmandu to the small mountain town of Lukla, the gateway to the Everest region. From Lukla, trekkers embark on a path that winds through the Khumbu Valley, where verdant forests, rushing rivers, and ancient glaciers pave the way to higher altitudes. The itinerary includes acclimatization days in Namche Bazaar, the bustling hub of the Everest region, and Dingboche, a picturesque village offering stunning views of the Himalayan giants. These stops are crucial for adjusting to the altitude and reducing the risk of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS).

You'll be treated to your first glimpse of the awe-inspiring Mt. Everest and fill you with excitement for what lies ahead on the trek to Everest Base Camp.

The trail then eases into a scenic journey with gentle ups and downs until reaching Kyangjuma.
After Kyangjuma, the path leads us down to the Dudh Kosi River, offering a welcome change in pace. The day's final challenge- a tough steep climb but rewarding two-hour push that leads directly to Tengboche. A picturesque village dominated by the magnificent Tengboche Monastery, the largest in the Khumbu region.
Tengboche is a natural stopping point, but for those with extra energy, the village of Dingboche lies just 30 minutes further along the trail. The decision is yours – cozy up in Tengboche, or push on for a bit more altitude?
Day 6: Trek from Tengboche to Dingboche- Exploration
The morning presented a gentle climb out of Dingboche (3,985m), crossing over the Imja Khola River and following the trail that winds through the Pangboche Valley. This charming village boasts the Pangboche Monastery, one of the oldest in the Khumbu region, dating back to the 16th century.

Day 8: Trek from Dingboche to Lobuche- Pushing on through Thin Air
Continuing on over craggy mountain terrain, the 8.5km trek from Dingboche to Lobuche takes roughly 5 hours. You begin with a stroll towards Thukla, a lunch stop nestled at 4600 metres. Refuelled and ready to tackle the challenge ahead, you’ll embark on a steep 1.5-hour climb to Thukla Pass. The lower oxygen levels at this altitude will undoubtedly make this section more strenuous. Reaching the summit of Thukla Pass is a humbling experience. At the summit lies a poignant memorial park honouring those who perished on Mt. Everest. From the pass, it's a final 1-hour walk to Lobuche, a small yet charming village embraced by majestic peaks and the sprawling Khumbu Glacier and your basecamp as you prepare for the push towards Everest Base Camp tomorrow.
Day 9: Trek from Lobuche to Gorak Shep
Your destination is Gorak Shep, the last stop before Everest Base Camp, 5,140 metres (16,860 feet). The hike takes roughly 2 and a half hours and traverses an uneven, rocky path with sections of glacier. Brace yourself, because it's known as one of the toughest days of the trek.
Upon reaching Gorak Shep, you'll have a decision to make: summit Kalapathar for sunset views or continue to Everest Base Camp (EBC). Those who are physically fit can attempt both in a single day.
Reaching EBC, at an altitude of 5,364 metres (17,267 feet), takes approximately 3-4 hours for the round trip and offers incredible views of Pumori, Lingtren, Khumbutse, Changtse, Everest, and Nuptse. The trail is a gradual uphill battle with some downhill sections, but the rocky and potentially slippery terrain makes it a demanding trek.
Kalapathar, at 5550 metres (18,208 ft), is another option and is considered by many to be an even better spot for sunset views of the Everest region, including a clear view of Everest itself. Perched on the slopes of Mount Pumori, reaching Kalapathar requires a steep climb, but the reward is truly unforgettable.
Regardless of your choice, you'll spend the night in Gorak Shep, ready to tackle the next leg of your Everest Base Camp adventure.
Day 10: Descending from Gorak Shep to Pheriche
Today marks a shift in our Everest Base Camp trek. With Gorakshep conquered and Everest Base Camp explored, we retrace our steps from Gorak Shep back to Pheriche. This 10km journey will take approximately 6-7 hours, following the same path we ascended yesterday until we reach Thukla.
Thukla, a small settlement marked by a rickety bridge, signals a change in pace. The path from here transforms into a pleasant downhill slope, providing some welcome relief for your legs after days of climbing. After a delightful 30 minutes of downhill, the trail flattens out, leading you comfortably into Pheriche.
Reaching Pheriche (4270m) offers a well-deserved rest stop. Here, you can choose to rest your weary legs for the night or push on for another 7 km to Pangboche. This additional leg takes roughly 2 hours and leads you higher into the Khumbu Valley.
Whether you choose Pheriche or Pangboche, tonight will be a chance to celebrate your achievements and relish the stunning Himalayan scenery.
Day 11: Trek from Pheriche to Namche- Relief and Revelations
Trade the uphill battle for a welcome descent from Pheriche to Tengboche. Soak in the last majestic views of the Himalayas as you cross the bridge at Phungi Tenga. The trail throws a cheeky uphill curveball to Sansa, a perfect spot for a well-earned lunch break. From Sansa, it's a leisurely two-hour stroll back to Namche Bazaar. This bustling town, at a lower altitude, will feel like a luxurious retreat after conquering the higher reaches.
Day 12: Trek from Namche to Lukla- Farewell to Everest
The trek back to Lukla is your final Everest Base Camp hurrah! Though it's the longest at roughly 18 kilometers, taking 6-7 hours, it's mostly downhill, making it a welcome challenge. Retrace your steps from Namche Bazaar, winding through familiar pine and rhododendron forests and Sherpa villages. Reaching Lukla will be bittersweet. You'll likely feel a mix of exhaustion and immense satisfaction. But that's not the end! Lukla's pubs/bars are the perfect place to celebrate with your fellow trekkers, offering a perfect setting to reminisce about the challenges and triumphs of Everest Base Camp adventure.
