Manaslu and Ganesh Himal Region Trekking

Manaslu and Ganesh Himal Region Trekking

The huge mountain landscapes of Manaslu and Ganesh are simply an ecological phenomenon. We see the two horned giants of Manaslu at a massive {8156m} & the circumference of this mountain could leave viewers baffled at the wonders of God’s creations in the geology of these Himalayan gems. We also encounter Ganesh Himal at (7406m); this southern ridge which is shaped like that of a snake gets its name from the elephant-headed Hindu god that represents good fortune. In this region we also come across the Himalchuli at (7893m), which climbs up from the Marsyangdi River at a towering 7000m. Neatly sitting in between these huge mountains are lively villages that find solace in the Hindu & Buddhist doctrines of the spiritual. In this mix we find some lovely butterflies dancing in forests of sal & pine, and you may be lucky to get a glimpse of a shy red panda munching in the bushes…

The Manaslu region is an interesting amalgamation that clings between the past and future – where we get villages living in quiet isolation, but all geared up to welcome visitors – its very likely that this off-the-track-trail will probably become the next trekkers paradise to a new world of adventure. The Manaslu region has been ignored much due to the other familiar trekking regions on both sides of its borders; ironically, both these mountains called ‘mountain of spirit’’ and the ‘elephant mountain’ are just amazing, and conveniently accessible by bus, but yet it’s strange why guides & avid trekkers have taken so long to discover these wonders of nature…

Manaslu is geographically placed north of the historic bastion town of Gorkha, the birth place of Nepal’s famous unifier king Prithvi Narayan Shah who laid waste to the different feudal kingdoms of Nepal & finally unified the country in the 18th Century. The Manaslu Circuit of late has now become a teahouse trail, constructing warm wooded villages into cosy cottages in the area of the Nupri Valley. However, backpackers looking for a tussle with the true wild are Scot-free to explore the many other trails in the offing right now. The highly popular Tsum Valley trek opens up lovely vistas of the four 7000m peaks of the Ganesh massif, and visitors will get a tryst of the discrete Tibetan-influenced culture of the Tsumba people, who strictly disallow the slaughter of all living beings. And this has been a boon for the wild animals thriving in the area, especially the endangered species that make up the snow leopard & the red panda & other wild fauna that are now safe in this region.

Hikers heading this way can now also experience a charming cultural home stay with the Tamangs who inhabit this area, also known as the pioneers of horse trading in Nepal. Adventure lovers can stakeout higher altitudes for a ‘hike in the clouds’’ above Tiru Danda, from where elegant views can be seen spread out far & wide from the Annapurnas to Ganesh Himal. The region has more than enough to compete with the Annapurna region, & it’s not surprising to note that Manaslu’s time has come to take on the world for its natural beauty.

Why get clogged up in the more familiar regions because even with the teahouses, hiking hereabouts has a whole range of diverse landscapes on offer than routes that have been known more. Besides the buzzing teahouses, trekking down here is literally the trails, the mountains & you – there’s nobody else & we’re sure you wouldn’t mind sharing it with blue sheep, langurs, yaks and the dancing hordes of pretty butterflies flying around gushing milky looking cascading waterfalls.
