Overview

Combining the two most famous treks in the Annapurna region: the Poonhill trek and Annapurna Base Camp trek the Annapurna Sanctuary trek is absolutely amazing.  The trek first takes you on a loop around the Annapurna region by visiting the Ghorepani-Poonhill area. The view from up here is absolutely amazing. The sunrise from Poonhill attracts locals and internationals alike. At the region you will be able to see local houses and villages also to get an idea of what life is like here. After this, we walk down to Chhomrong to rejoin the classic Annnapurna Base Camp Trek.

Moving from villages like Deurali, Bamboo and Dovan we reach the Macchapucchre Base Camp and walking further we reach our second objective, Annapurna Base Camp. The 360 degree view from Annapurna Base Camp is amazing as well. Almost the entire trek follows the Modi river all the way up to the base camp.

The trek is named the Annapurna Sanctuary Trek after the area in the Annapurna Conservation Area where killing animals is prohibited by local religious customs. The Gurung, one of the many indigenous peoples of the region, held the entire sanctuary in the highest regard as a sacred place. They thought it was the Nagas' (Indian serpent gods) repository for treasure, full of gold and other valuables. Deities from Hinduism, Buddhism, and even older animistic religions were thought to make their homes in the sanctuary. Machhapuchhre, the gateway peak, was believed to be Shiva's dwelling, and the daily snow gushes were interpreted as the god's incense.

You will experience a diversity of ecosystems while on the trek. Rhododendron forests, bamboo groves, pine woodlands and areas with only small shrubs and herbs are all experienced on this trek. The temperature variation is also quite large from Pokhara all the way to the ABC.

You will be able to catch views of Annapurna, Machhapuchhre, Annapurna South, Gangapurnam Himchuli and many more massifs on the trek. So if an exciting adventure in the mountains is what you are looking for join the Annapurna Sanctuary Trek!

Best Season

Most people agree that the best times to hike the Annapurna Sanctuary trail are in either October or November, or in April or May. Clear, dry weather prevails during these two seasons, making hikes to higher elevations less of a challenge. During these two seasons, hikers from all over the world journey to the Himalayas. The spring season, which lasts from March to May, is when the majority of the year's flowers bloom. Many people find that the added color variety enhances the aesthetic value of the trails.

However, the best mountain views are to be had in the autumn, when the skies are crystal clear. As a result of these factors, autumn is regarded as one of the top reasons for hiking.

The winter season, which lasts from December to March, is also characterized by clear skies and stunning vistas. Colder temperatures and deeper snowfall at higher elevations may make it challenging to reach Annapurna Base Camp.

and the route to the peak will be closed during this time.
